Graduate Jobs

Looking for jobs in an uncertain market? This is not the best time to be looking for work. With there being a wider range of people to choose from, companies can afford to be more demanding when they are advertising for jobs. This means that a job you may have been offered before may now be out of your reach. Currently it is believed that the group of people finding it toughest are graduates who have specific skills but perhaps are lacking in experience. With there being fewer jobs available and more people looking, it is important for people to do as much as they can to give themselves an advantage in the job market. Follow these tips to enhance your chances at finding a good job.•    Keep your options open. Don’t just look for one permanent full time job, even if that is what you want. You can combine two part time jobs and get two sets of experience and industry knowledge at the same time. Don’t turn down temporary jobs; if you do well enough they can sometimes become into permanent positions.•    Don’t be fussy – at this time any experience is good experience. You will get future opportunities to find a job you want but until that time comes, it’s better to be working in a job you don’t enjoy than to be doing nothing at all. If you find yourself in a job you don’t enjoy, do not show it. Being able to take on any task and do well is what companies will look for in a permanent employee. They may change your duties and give you something you enjoy more if you’ve shown you can do the boring stuff.•    Get any training possible. Some jobs will start you off at the very bottom but will offer graduate training for a lower salary. This is valuable to you as it will help you stand out amongst candidates who are looking for related jobs.•    Pay close attention. If you do want to look specifically for graduate Job search site, be organised and prepared. Graduates searching for jobs are very well catered for. Take advantage of university advice, career fairs and books designed to break down the graduate recruitment characteristics of companies.•    Look out for unusual recruitment methods. Intelligence agency GCHQ used Xbox Live to run a recruitment campaign in 2009 in an attempt to find people with specialist technical skills in its target audience. •    Consider all your skills. Following on from the Xbox campaign used by GCHQ, more young people were encouraged to list all skills they have demonstrated, regardless of the way they’ve portrayed those skills. GCHQ were looking for qualities such as “quick thinking, problem solving and team work”. Don’t just think about your work or university experiences, think outside the box and consider everything you’re good at. •    Don’t ignore regular jobs. A graduate job will be designed to help you progress through the company using the skills gained during your degree, complemented by regular reviews and a strict structure. This won’t differ greatly from a regular job but the levels of responsibility won’t be immediately as high and you may be paid less. However, if you work hard and show dedication to the company it won’t be long before you are trained to a high level and may find yourself moving through the company at a good rate.
